(Pictures coming soon.)My A7K came configured with:
|
Hardware Components
|
Status under Slackware 12
|
Notes
|
| AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-58 (dual core, 1.8 GHz, 1 MB total L2 cache) | Supported by vanilla i386 kernel | Needed to pass 'nosmp' and 'noapic' to 2.6.21.5 kernel; 'irqpoll' to 2.6.24-rc4. |
| DDR-667 RAM, came with a single 1 GB module installed in the inaccessible slot. I installed a second 1 GB module in the user-accessible slot for a total of 2GB. | Supported by vanilla i386 kernel | One memory slot (initially empty) is easily accessible behind a panel on the bottom of the laptop. The other is near the first but covered by the laptop body even when that panel is removed, so if the factory-installed module goes bad you're going to have to disassemble the whole case (and perhaps break a warranty seal?) to get at it. On the other hand, you don't have to pay extra to get your initial memory in a single module, as you do with some manufacturers. |
| ATI Mobile Radeon HD2600 | Supported by the vesa and ati drivers from X.org | 3D acceleration provided by the closed-source fglrx driver from ATI (even though the HD2600 is not yet listed in the product selection pane of ATI's main driver page. See configuration notes below. |
| 17" WXGA+ (1440x900) display | Supported by X.org | I thought it was non-glossy when I ordered it, but it turned out to be glossy when it arrived. I'm still not completely sold on the idea, but didn't feel like returning the machine. The glare is minimal unless there's light falling directly on the panel, in which case it's pretty bad. The brightness is outstanding. |
| Realtek 8199SC gigabit Ethernet (RJ-45 interface) | Supported by the r8169 driver | |
| JMicron 20363 SATA controller | Supported by the ahci driver | |
| ATI SB600 PATA controller | Supported by the pata_atiixp driver | |
| Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 / SB40C70P SATA hard drive (UDMA 100, 160GB, 5400 rpm) | Autodetected and works, appears as /dev/sda | Requires 'lba32' option in LILO (now the default.) Delays bootup sequence with a long sequence of "Failed to IDENTIFY" errors in newer kernels unless the kernel parameter 'irqpoll' was passed |
| HL-DT-ST GSA-T20L DVD+/-RW and DVD-RAM drive (24x, UDMA 33) | Autodetected and works, bootable | CD/DVD writing not yet tested |
| Syntek AVStream webcam (USB 2.0, 1.3 megapixel) | Identified by lspci; no driver in standard kernel | Supports Video4Linux via the stk11xx driver |
| ``CSIbetween'' Bluetooth interface | Supported by the bluetooth driver. | |
| 5 USB 2.0 ports | Supported by the ohci_hcd driver | |
| One Firewire port | Supported by the ieee1394 (OHCI) driver. | |
| Ricoh R5C822 flash card (SD/SDIO/MMC) reader | Supported by the ricoh_mmc and sdhci drivers | |
| Ricoh R5C592 flash card (Memory Stick/xD) reader | Identified by lspci but not yet tested. | |
| ATI SB600 Azalia audio controller (HDA) | Supported by ALSA via the snd_hda_intel driver. See configuration notes below. | |
| Soft modem, driven by the SB600 Azalia chip | Not detected. | Reportedly supported by some hsfmodem/alsa/kernel combinations; haven't tested it myself. |
| i8042 serial controller | Detected as keyboard and four auxiliary serial devices | There are no physical serial ports on the machine (other than a mini-DIN connector for an external keyboard); I presume that these virtual ports are reserved for RS-232 emulation over USB. This chip may have something to do with the onboard modem but that's not immediately obvious. |
| HDMI output | Not tested | |
| Touchpad | Detected and supported as a ps2 mouse by X.org | |
| Five media player control buttons (Music, Prev, Next, Stop, Play/Pause) along the front edge | Generate normal key events seen by xev | |
| Four special function buttons to the left of the keyboard | Not seen by xev | May be supported by the asus-laptop feature in newer kernels; not yet tested |
This laptop worked under kernel version 2.6.21.5 (Slackware 12 default) when the nosmp and noapic options were passed to the bootloader. SMP is possible under 2.6.23 or 2.6.24-rc4 with the irqpoll option passed to the bootloader.
When I rebooted, the newly installed kernel (/boot/vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.21.5-smp) wouldn't boot until I added both 'nosmp' and 'noapic' as kernel parameters. I was finally able to get SMP activated with the 2.6.23 and 2.6.24-rc4 kernels (2.6.22 not tested), although these take a loooong time to boot due to SATA timeouts unless the kernel parameter 'irqpoll' is passed. I'm using 2.6.24-rc4 now; it boots quickly and seems perfectly stable with SMP, ACPI, and APIC when launched with the 'irqpoll' parameter (i.e. nosmp, noapic, acpi=noirq/off, etc. are NOT necessary.)
The hard drive was originally divided into four different Windows partitions, presumably to support hibernation, system recovery, etc. I replaced them with an 8GB swap partition (probably excessive, but make it at least twice as large as your RAM if you want to use Software Suspend) and Linux partitions as desired.
One alternative to the partially closed-source Madwifi driver is the new ath5k module, part of the Linux Wireless Compatibility project. Unfortunately, the installation process is considerably rougher around the edges than that of madwifi, and the patches cannot be applied to kernels earlier than 2.6.22 (Slackware 12 shipped with 2.6.21-5.) I wasn't able to get anything but an 'interface not ready' error with ath5k, but the driver is actively being developed and may have improved by the time you read this. UPDATE: the ath5k driver works perfectly starting with the 2.6.27 kernel series.
I originally settled for the ndiswrapper approach. Find a 32-bit Windows XP driver for the Atheros 5007EG (such as the ones here or here; if you need to peek inside InstallShield .cab files get an unpacking tool here), register it with 'ndiswrapper -i whatever.inf', and 'modprobe ndiswrapper' to initialize the interface. If you've already installed the madwifi or ath5k drivers, add the lines 'blacklist ath_pci' and 'blacklist ath5k' to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to prevent them from being automatically loaded when the hardware is detected (ndiswrapper won't be.) All of these drivers support the standard wireless tools, so you should be able to enter your settings directly in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and manage them with the iwconfig/iwspy/iwlist/etc. toolset.
/usr/local/sbin/hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x01 SET_GPIO_MASK 3 /usr/local/sbin/hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x01 SET_GPIO_DIRECTION 1 /usr/local/sbin/hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x01 SET_GPIO_DATA 1to a startup file (e.g. rc.local or rc.alsa.) You shouldn't need anything at all in /etc/modprobe.conf or /etc/modprobe.d/sound; if you insist on trying to force the configuration I recommend
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel options snd-hda-intel model=auto options snd-pcsp index=2There's a proposed OSS4 patch here, but I haven't tested it yet.
I initially installed the '7-11' (8433) version (UPDATE: have now tested through version 9-7) of the fglrx driver from ATI. The Device section of my xorg.conf follows; the acceleration settings are pretty aggressive unless you're running Compiz:
Section "Device"
Identifier "HD2600-fglrx"
Driver "fglrx"
VendorName "ATI Technologies, Inc."
BoardName "Mobile Radeon HD2600"
Option "DRI" "true"
Option "ColorTiling" "on"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Option "XAANoOffscreenPixmaps"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
# Option "AGPMode" "x"
# Option "AGPFastWrite" "on"
Option "VBERestore" "true"
EndSection
By default, I was receiving GLX accleration only when the X session was owned by root; to provide 3D acceleration to all users add the section
Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSectionto the configuration file. To get the X Composite extension working, add the section
Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSectionKDE 3.5, shipped with Slackware 12, already contains a compositing manager; you can enable it from the `Translucency' tab of the `Window Behavior' control panel (in Control Center.) There are some slight visual artifacts (e.g. when highlighting in Konsole) but overall it's a good experience. Of course, to really impress your friends you'll want to install Compiz. I installed the version 0.60/0.62 packages compiz-bcop, compiz-fusion, compiz-fusion-plugins-main, and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra from linuxpackages.net, and was then able to switch to Compiz with the script
#!/bin/sh LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true compiz --replace ccp $* & kde-window-decorator &(To switch back to KDE, use 'kwin --replace &'.) Of course, to actually adjust your Compiz settings you'll want to install some more packages. To use a KDE-based tool, install libcompizconfig, compizconfig-backend-kconfig, and compizconfig-kconfig. If you use Gnome (easy to do in Slackware via dropline), install compizconfig-backend-gconf and compizconfig-gconf. There's a pretty good graphical configuration manager that can be installed with the packages ccsm, compizconfig-python, pygobject, pygtk, and pycairo. There's also a simple-ccsm package but I haven't tried it yet.
