This laptop worked under kernel version 2.6.21.5 (Slackware 12 default) when the nosmp and noapic options were passed to the bootloader. SMP is possible under 2.6.23 or 2.6.24-rc4 with the irqpoll option passed to the bootloader.

Slackware installation

The SMP-enabled huge.s kernel on the Slackware 12 installation disks froze during the boot sequence (sorry, don't remember where; I'll retest someday.) Rebooting and passing the option 'nosmp' at the boot parameters prompt allowed a clean boot. The default kernel supported almost all of the key hardware except wireless networking.

When I rebooted, the newly installed kernel (/boot/vmlinuz-huge-smp-2.6.21.5-smp) wouldn't boot until I added both 'nosmp' and 'noapic' as kernel parameters. I was finally able to get SMP activated with the 2.6.23 and 2.6.24-rc4 kernels (2.6.22 not tested), although these take a loooong time to boot due to SATA timeouts unless the kernel parameter 'irqpoll' is passed. I'm using 2.6.24-rc4 now; it boots quickly and seems perfectly stable with SMP, ACPI, and APIC when launched with the 'irqpoll' parameter (i.e. nosmp, noapic, acpi=noirq/off, etc. are NOT necessary.)

The hard drive was originally divided into four different Windows partitions, presumably to support hibernation, system recovery, etc. I replaced them with an 8GB swap partition (probably excessive, but make it at least twice as large as your RAM if you want to use Software Suspend) and Linux partitions as desired.

Drivers requiring manual installation

Wireless networking

The onboard 802.11b/g networking is provided by an Atheros 5007EG chipset (misidentified by lspci as a 5006EG.) The latest versions of madwifi support the 5006EG but not the 5007EG. A thread in the madwifi support database contains a patch that allegedly adds support for this chipset. Unfortunately, the patch had just been removed due to copyright uncertainty at the time I received the laptop, so I took another route (see below.) The patch has since been restored. Madwifi is probably the cleanest route to getting networking working, so you might wish to try the patch before any other method, but I have not yet tested it myself.

One alternative to the partially closed-source Madwifi driver is the new ath5k module, part of the Linux Wireless Compatibility project. Unfortunately, the installation process is considerably rougher around the edges than that of madwifi, and the patches cannot be applied to kernels earlier than 2.6.22 (Slackware 12 shipped with 2.6.21-5.) I wasn't able to get anything but an 'interface not ready' error with ath5k, but the driver is actively being developed and may have improved by the time you read this. UPDATE: the ath5k driver works perfectly starting with the 2.6.27 kernel series.

I originally settled for the ndiswrapper approach. Find a 32-bit Windows XP driver for the Atheros 5007EG (such as the ones here or here; if you need to peek inside InstallShield .cab files get an unpacking tool here), register it with 'ndiswrapper -i whatever.inf', and 'modprobe ndiswrapper' to initialize the interface. If you've already installed the madwifi or ath5k drivers, add the lines 'blacklist ath_pci' and 'blacklist ath5k' to the end of /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to prevent them from being automatically loaded when the hardware is detected (ndiswrapper won't be.) All of these drivers support the standard wireless tools, so you should be able to enter your settings directly in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1.conf and manage them with the iwconfig/iwspy/iwlist/etc. toolset.

Suspend/hibernate and resume

I'm using the Software Suspend 2 (``Tux on Ice'') driver available here. Suspending to RAM ('echo mem > /sys/power/state') works, but I haven't yet successfully resumed from hibernation to disk; I'll add some more information to this section when it's working.

Sound output

ALSA supports the card fairly well until you install alsa-driver 1.15 or newer or kernel 2.6.20 or newer. Once you cross either of those bridges, the driver continues to recognize and configure the card, but actual sound output is pretty dicey--- sometimes you can find a set of modprobe options that enable the speakers or the headphone jack, but usually not both, the quality is poor, and the required options are not consistent between kernel and driver versions or SMP/no-SMP configuration. Fortunately, there's finally a palatable solution: a talented hacker named dfm7a traced the bug to the auto-SPDIF detection on the line out port, and developed a workaround: install the hda-verb utility, and add the commands:

There's a proposed OSS4 patch here, but I haven't tested it yet.

3D acceleration and similar tricks

UPDATE: kernels 2.6.29 and newer break the fglrx kernel module, and due to license pissing contests I don't expect ATI to hurry to issue a fix. This thread contains a patch for one particular version of the driver, but the principle applies to any: threads can now posess more than one set of credentials, so current->euid needs to be changed to current->cred->euid; an explicit cast is required to modify the effective capabilities structure with cap_lower() or cap_raise(); you have to #include the driver/acpi/acpica configuration files from your kernel source to use the related headers; and modprobe will refuse to load the module without a force unless you pretend it's GPL.

I initially installed the '7-11' (8433) version (UPDATE: have now tested through version 9-7) of the fglrx driver from ATI. The Device section of my xorg.conf follows; the acceleration settings are pretty aggressive unless you're running Compiz:

KDE 3.5, shipped with Slackware 12, already contains a compositing manager; you can enable it from the `Translucency' tab of the `Window Behavior' control panel (in Control Center.) There are some slight visual artifacts (e.g. when highlighting in Konsole) but overall it's a good experience. Of course, to really impress your friends you'll want to install Compiz. I installed the version 0.60/0.62 packages compiz-bcop, compiz-fusion, compiz-fusion-plugins-main, and compiz-fusion-plugins-extra from linuxpackages.net, and was then able to switch to Compiz with the script

(To switch back to KDE, use 'kwin --replace &'.) Of course, to actually adjust your Compiz settings you'll want to install some more packages. To use a KDE-based tool, install libcompizconfig, compizconfig-backend-kconfig, and compizconfig-kconfig. If you use Gnome (easy to do in Slackware via dropline), install compizconfig-backend-gconf and compizconfig-gconf. There's a pretty good graphical configuration manager that can be installed with the packages ccsm, compizconfig-python, pygobject, pygtk, and pycairo. There's also a simple-ccsm package but I haven't tried it yet.

Webcam

The stk11xx project provides a low-level driver for the camera. You'll also need to enable Video4Linux 2 support (Video4Linux 1 compatibility is a good idea) in your kernel; stk11xx.ko depends on the videodev module from the standard kernel tree (drivers/media/video). You can capture video with xawtv or MPlayer, teleconference with Skype, etc. Sound capture is provided by ALSA; don't forget to adjust the microphone capture volume in alsamixer if it doesn't seem to be working.

Windows refund process

The laptop comes with Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled. I'm in the process of trying to get a refund out of Asus right now; stay tuned. Sadly, I couldn't find accounts on the internet of anyone who's successfully wrung a refund out of them in the past.
